Founded in 1984 by Sharon Gannon and David Life, Jivamukti Yoga (“liberation while living”) is a physical, ethical, and spiritual path that uses vinyasa practice to cultivate universal compassion and realization of the interconnectedness of all beings. Rooted in the belief that personal enlightenment is inseparable from social and environmental activism, the method rests upon five core tenets: Ahimsa (non-violence, actively expressed through veganism and animal rights), Bhakti (devotional surrender of the ego), Shastra (study of ancient yogic scriptures and Sanskrit teachings), Nada (the yoga of sound, chanting, and deep listening), and Dhyana (meditation to connect with inner presence).
