Third Eye Chakra
Located at the space between the eyebrows, ajna chakra is known as the “third eye”and connects to the “sixth sense,” or intuition, innate wisdom, and natural intelligence. The third eye perceives things differently from our two physical eyes, and it allows us to see others as they truly are. The third eye sees the divine nature of all beings. When this chakra is in balance, we experience harmony, clarity, and purpose. We are also able to touch, taste, smell, see, and hear with our intuition—essentially we raise our five other senses to an intuitive state. This chakra is out of balance when we have difficulty making decisions, sense a lack of direction, or experience a feeling of chaos in our lives.
What is it that causes this disconnection from the intuitive sense? When we perceive other beings as “things” to own, exploit, or use for personal benefit, we disconnect from the third eye. This disconnection allows humans to participate in horrific acts of unnecessary violence toward other creatures. We often perceive our fellow earthlings—who are not part of the “human animal” species—with our two physical eyes. The physical eyes see them as separate and different from humans. To see these beings as they truly are—to perceive their similarities to humans as well as their divine nature—we view them with all three eyes. When we view fellow animals through the lens of the third eye, we know them as our brothers and sisters. Their essential, divine nature is the same as ours.
Are you a good or bad judge of character? Perhaps you have used certain phrases to describe your reactions, like, “How did I not see that coming?” or, “I’m such a bad judge of character!” Many of us have the ability to see things unfold before our physical eyes, but miss out on seeing them with our intuitive, or third eyes. Maybe you bought into a scam, or felt duped by a stranger. Perhaps you’ve been in a relationship with someone, during which words or actions seemed to take place “out of the blue.” When unforeseen forces turn your world upside down, your intuitive sense tunes into what is genuine and “unplugs” from what it perceives to be insincere.
Whether we are “plugged in” to them or unaware of their existence, we are all intuitive beings with functioning third eyes. We each have moments of awakening during which we receive glimpses of the third eye at work. Have you ever experienced a feeling of knowing—a hunch or an “a-ha” moment? Have you ever thought of a person and then happened to see them later that same day? Were you ever in a conversation with someone who says, “I was just thinking that!” after you bring up a new topic? Have you ever said the same thing at the same time as another person? These “chance encounters” or “coincidences” happen every moment of every day, and they do not happen by accident. Every being we encounter has a message to share with us. And, when we tap into our intuition, we frequently take note of their messages. This is the third-eye “command center” of knowledge. During these moments, we are in tune with both our true selves and with others. The yogi sees “third eye to third eye.” When we intuitively perceive the divine in everyone, love and wholeness permeate our beings.
