Forward Bends and Twisting Poses

Please watch/practice the video below listening to cues and utilizing props. The first video focuses on detailed alignment and props for the posture category.  The second video focuses on class cues that to not overwhelm practitioners with too much information. Refer to Chapter 4 of World Peace Yoga digital book for points of alignment, cues, sequences, and more.

Teaching points to consider:

  • Teach the form without using the name of the pose (or relying on the pose name to get someone into the form/posture)
  • Give alignment cues from base of pose to top of pose. (Alignment cues explain the relationship between one body part and another body part (i.e. knee over ankle) or the mat (i.e. all ten toes facing the long edge of the mat.)
  • Give breath cues that connect/make sense with movement (Inhales on lengthening or lifting movements; exhales on folding or lowering movements)
  • Ensure your voice is clear and cues are direct
  • Offer modifications and props

BONUS EXERCISE:  Record yourself teaching a single pose that was instructed in the Alignment/Props and Class Cues videos below.  Play back the recording and listen to how you guide the pose.
