For Community

“Food is the epicenter of community. The act of making a meal is an opportunity to celebrate that fellowship. Yet, somehow, we’ve forgotten this truth.

If you look back in history, food was viewed primarily as a source of community, joining people in fellowship around the table. The act of sharing a meal had nothing to do with nutrients, but instead an energetic exchange between individuals.

Somewhere along the way, food shifted to a means to fill our insatiability and satisfy fleeting cravings.

Think about it this way: In the 1950s, the average family spent around 30% of their household income on food. Now that’s down to around 10%, with the other 90% allocated to mortgages, cars, fashion trends — ownership of more stuff.

We spend less money on food and therefore place less value on it.  It’s time to reconnect with our food, the soils from which that food comes from, and create space for the love that is waiting to pour through.

Let’s seek new opportunities to gather in communion around the dinner table, in our community gardens or markets, and re-honor the food preparation process. Let’s revisit the act of eating as a sacred and shared experience that feeds not only our bodies, but our mind and hearts too.” -Zach Bush MD
