Intro to Yoga Sutras

Many of the yoga teachings and practices found in World Peace Yoga: Yoga for People Who Breathe developed from Patanjali, a resource established centuries ago. Patanjali was either an individual or a group of like-minded individuals (history is unclear on this point). We recognize Patanjali for compiling and organizing the Yoga Sutras; these were once an oral tradition and are now available to everyone. Patanjali did not invent yoga, but is widely known for visionary insights on the subject. The text of the Yoga Sutras unfolded—likely with the assistance of others—as a summary of preexisting yoga practices that consist of both practical advice and theoretical context.

Read the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali  and focus on Books 1 and 2. There are several translations available. Choose one that resonates with you.

The Yoga Sutras are defined as threads of union. The term sutra means “thread” and yoga means “union.” Watch/listen in on the “Intro to Yoga Sutras/What is Yoga?” community conversation facilitated by Betsi Heithaus and Mark Stroud.

Audio compilation of community conversations around the topic of “What is Yoga?” It includes and introduction to the Yoga Sutras and discussion of: Yogas Chitta Vritti Nirodaha, Yoga the meaning, the goal (YS 1:1-6) and the Four Attitudes (YS 1.33).
