Root Chakra

Located at the base of the spine, the muladhara chakra is associated with our survival and ability to thrive. When the muladhara chakra is in balance, it connects with “prosperity consciousness,” which equates to living in a state of abundance and wealth. When this chakra is out of balance, it connects with “poverty consciousness,” which equates to living in a state of scarcity, with a lack of security. When this chakra is in balance, we feel grounded, centered, and safe. When this chakra is out of balance, we feel off-center, unfocused, and insecure. We may experience these sensations both mentally and physically.

Are you someone who is habitually late, has difficulty paying bills, resists collaborating with others, and/or feels scattered and ungrounded? Are you moving from one thing to the next without sticking to anything? Perhaps you use phrases like, I don’t have any money,” “I can do it myself,” or “I don’t have time for that.” You may focus on prosperity day and night, but until you change your daily thoughts, words, and actions, this poverty consciousness remains in effect.

When you struggle with work, time, money, collaboration, or feeling scattered, your root chakra may be out of balance. Dwelling in a poverty frame of mind makes a person feel like he or she is barely surviving, let alone thriving.

What might you do to step into a state of prosperity consciousness? Begin by taking ownership of your thoughts, words, and actions. Stop reinforcing the attitudes and languages of scarcity and focus on abundance. Instead of saying, “I’m broke,” you might say, “I don’t have the budget for that right now, but I may in the future.” Replace the phrase, “I don’t have time for that,” with, “I am going to make time for that in my schedule,” or perhaps, “That is not a priority for me right now; I’ll make time for it in the future.” Show up on time and be present with others, whether you are keeping a professional appointment or simply meeting a friend for tea. When you practice better time management, the scattered, ungrounded feelings decrease.

Stepping into prosperity consciousness also includes taking things on as your own. Are you working at a job that isn’t ideal for you personally? Do you desire to do something else someday? Regardless of your ideal scenario, treat your job as if you were working within your own business. This attitude leads to increased prosperity and provides the potential to either leave your job for a more fulfilling one, or to grow and expand in your current employment.

Being late for work, as one example, stems from poverty consciousness. When you are habitually late, the energy of poverty consciousness seeps into your place of business. This explains why many companies have a “zero tolerance” policy for tardiness, since it is not possible for a business to thrive on this kind of energy. Consider the businesses or organizations you care about, or with whom you collaborate. You play a significant role in their ability to thrive simply by showing up on time.

Collaborating with our fellow humans provides another example of prosperity consciousness. By working together, we may achieve greatness. Sharing similar values is an important aspect of any partnership, so it is important to choose wisely when deciding with whom to collaborate. Standing up for our values is vital part of being a yogi, and it is not always easy. When we connect with these core values—and release any fears we may feel about collaborating with others—our creativity flows. Working side-by-side with those who share similar interests and intentions increases prosperity and abundance for everyone involved!

For prosperity to occur in your life, it is also important to consider the wellness of others, and to strive toward prosperity for them. When we exploit other beings for food, clothing, entertainment, or any other purpose, we obliterate their ability to be prosperous in life. The concept of karma comes into play here: when we “dine” on the energy of despair and deprivation, we experience the opposite of abundance. This reality covers all aspects of life, including our health, well-being, and financial security. When our thoughts, words, and actions allow freedom of choice for all beings, we take a huge leap into prosperity consciousness.
